Unknown to many, wind chimes have been around far too long they are already laden with too many storiessuperstitions and mythsthat have been passed on from generation to generation. Some of them may be senseless while others can be rational. The bottom line is, you dont have to really believe them.
Feng Shui and Wind Chimes
Wind chimes are very popular in Asia, and its no wonder they have found their correlation with feng shui. Feng shui is the Chinese process of determining where to place the objects best. The purpose is to make the most out of the chi, or the flow of energy, to your advantage. By modifying the positions of certain objects, you can counter negativity and usher in good luck or fortune in several aspects of your life, such as love, wealth, and health.
Feng shui considers sound as one of the best ways to get rid of negative energy. Thus, you will find that a lot of homes actually have wind chimes. Where to place the wind chimes will depend on the feng shui master. However, you can rest on the fact that as long as they make some sounds, they are getting rid of the bad energies from getting into your home.
Wind Chimes as a Weather Forecaster
A long time ago, people dont have the most sophisticated devices they can use to predict weather. Then the wind chimes came along.
Many believe that the ornament can help determine the possible weather. For one, it can be utilized to determine where the wind is coming from. For example, if the wind chime is placed in the northern part of the house and then it suddenly moves and produces sound, then the wind must be coming from the north.
Moreover, people long ago would also listen to the intensity of the sound. If it came out too strong, then there is a huge chance that a storm is brewing. You can expect farmers and fishermen hurrying up their jobs before strong winds and heavy rains caught up with them.
Tales of the Ghosts
Perhaps the creepiest superstition or myth surrounding the wind chimes has something to do with ghosts. What makes it more interesting is that the stories are very conflicting. On one hand, wind chimes are hung to get rid of evil spirits, more like the use of firecrackers on New Years Eve or the dragon dance of the Chinese. On the other, the soothing sounds produced by the chimes can attract ghosts to drop by and perhaps lounge at your house. This is because they can call up the dead. Talking about creepy!
You can ask your old next-door neighbor or your loving grandparents, and surely they can remember at least one or two stories about wind chimes. Of course, none of these are true.
Wind chimes do not really usher in good luck. Your fortune will depend on your dedication to work. It is not a reliable tool for predicting the weather either. It moves at the slightest wind movement, and it is not the reason why ghosts will haunt you. But wind chimes are adored by many because they are beautiful, and their sounds will definitely bring forth calm and serenity to anyone who gets to listen to them.
